BBC study reveals Falmouth's patchy 3G mobile coverage

Large swathes of Falmouth's town centre are not covered by 3G mobile phone services, according to the results of a study by the BBC.

And depending on the network, some users may even have difficulty taking advantage of their phone's older 2G services in all but a handful of places in and around the town.

The study took place earlier this summer, and involved 44,600 volunteers downloading a special application - or 'app' - for use on phones running Google's Android operating system. The app then monitored user's phone habits, collecting over 1.7 million hours of data from across the UK.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, much of the rural south west received patchy coverage for both 2G and 3G services, with built up areas such as Penzance and Truro faring better than most.

However, the BBC pointed out that though the survey was as comprehensive as possible, a lack of coverage in certain areas may be due to a single phone losing its signal, or reduced reception while in buildings.

So what are your experiences with mobile phone coverage around Falmouth? Do you receive a full 3G signal or, as the survey suggests, are you struggling to check whether you've received that all important email when you're out and about?

The 3g in town has bugged me for ages! Falmouth may be getting super fast broadband but we need decent 3g too.

I've had a few problems too. It's quite patchy in places, usually the exact spots I was to use it in!

Well that explains it then. I can never get a signal in the middle of town, never mind email! It's so annoying!
