Orangery

in Falmouth, Penryn, Budock, Mawnan Smith and Central Cornwall - Philip Whear are celebrating the

Summer by offering all Orangeries purchased before the end of September £250

towards citrus trees and pots (Click here for more details). Orangeries are

ideal for Cornwall and the Cornish environment because they offer a space to

experience the garden without having to go out in the weather!

The

history of the Orangery is intrinsically linked to the migration of the sweet

orange from its probable origins in Asia, over mainland Europe and eventually

reaching British shores in the Middle Ages.

The

earliest Orangery in the UK dates back to about 1580, built for Sir Francis

Carew at his home in Surrey, with perhaps the most famous of all Orangeries

being at Kensington Palace (built 1704-5), and Kew (built 1761). Unfortunately

there is little information regarding when Orangeries first appeared in

Cornwall, but they are suited to the Cornish environment, and modern Orangeries

offer the perfect combination of extended outdoor living and the structural

insulation and practicality of an extension.

The

Orangery faced a decline in the 19th and 20th Century, but are now facing

something of a revival because they offer an elegant and comfortable solution

to adding year round living space and also being one of the few home

improvements which adds value to your home, when done well, and in a considered

and thoughtful design that compliments an existing property.

If

you have been thinking about extending your home or adding a Conservatory, do

think about the Orangery. They can be manufactured in the traditional hardwood,

and the developments of uPVC (or PVCu) means that it is now possible to have an

authentic Orangery constructed in a material that is more durable and has lower

maintenance obligations than wood.

Philip

Whear Windows and Conservatories specialise in both hardwood timber and uPVC,

and our Design Consultants are highly trained and pride themselves on their

ability to transform your ideas into reality and offer a no obligation quote

with absolutely no pressure selling. We manufacture all our products in

Redruth, Cornwall and are part of the Cornwall Council Approved Origin Scheme.
