Cornwall Sustainability Awards winners announced

Businesses from Falmouth, Camborne, Helston, Perranporth, Redruth, Hayle and Truro were among the big winners at the 2012 Cornwall Sustainability Awards.

Around 200 guests packed the Green Lawns Hotel in Falmouth to celebrate the awards 10th anniversary and the work businesses in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly are doing to improve their sustainability.

PALL Newquay picked up the winner of winners award at the ceremony held on Friday, December 7 after being named Best Large Managed Company.

Event organiser, Gitty Ankers MBE, from the Environment Agency said: "This has been a fantastic year for the awards. We've had some very good entries and there has been some amazing work carried out by the businesses to become more sustainable.

"However, the judges were unanimous in their decision of awarding the overall winner to PALL.

"It's incredible to think that 10 years ago we'd just started the awards. It was a small ceremony compared to now and it's fantastic to think back and remember all the winners who have done a huge amount to improve sustainability in Cornwall."

Nature Workshops from Helston was named Best Small Managed Company, while Camborne-based Community Energy Plus collected the award for Best Medium Managed Company.

Perranporth-based based, ashortwalk, and Movevirgo from Redruth were joint winners in the Products category, while Useeka Travel from Bodmin won the Services award.

Mark England from Coastline Housing collected the Best Individual award, and the Clear Mapping Company in Falmouth picked up the first ever Green Shoots New Business accolade.

South West Water won the Resource Management category for its Hayle treatment works.

The County Arms in Truro won the Retro-fit award in the Sustainable Construction category, and the Cornwall Air Ambulance Trust signed off its 25th anniversary with the New Build award for its new base at Newquay Airport.

There was also The Alan Smith Business Award for Continuous Commitment to Sustainability in Cornwall, which went to Stralfors in Redruth.

During the ceremony the guests and competitors heard from Thom Hunt, Tim Cresswell and Trevor Brinkman, better known as Thom, Tim and Trev from Channel 4's Hugh's Three Hungry Boys. The trio also made cocktails using foraged ingredients for the assembled guests.
