PENROSE THE HERO:
Budock Vean put themselves through to the next round of the Daily Mail Team Classic with a thrilling 3-2 win over visitors Truro on Saturday.
It all came down to the last putt on the last green with Vean's Stephen Penrose emerging as the hero for the home team.
Truro's Darren Murrish was a tough opponent and playing the last one down, his fine tee shot, across the valley, on the 150 yard par three certainly asked the question of Steve.
But he held his nerve to find the green himself before lagging his putt for a "gimme" par which Murrish could not better, leaving Steve the winner and thus securing a 3-2 win for Budock Vean.
Earlier, Truro's Grant Champion won by three and two. It looked even better for Truro when Simon Bray romped home in the second match by four and three. Vean were hitting back however, through Paul Upperton who was playing some terrific golf in securing an emphatic five and four win.
Richard Burton, the captain of Budock Vean, was also in no mood to let things slip and he also played inspired golf to win by five and four to set the stage for Stephen Penrose.
On Sunday, in poor afternoon weather Stephen was at it again as he won the latest round of the Roger Mildren sponsored Winter League with a fine haul of 40 points.
Despite a superb back nine haul of 23 points Richard Burton had to settle for the runners up spot with 39 points just edging David Penrose into third place on countback. David Gudzij scooped the back nine two jackpot at the 15th hole.
This Sunday is the February monthly medal sponsored by Richard Burton Windows.
DRAMATIC FALMOUTH WIN:
There was also a great win for Falmouth in the same competition when they won a dramatic play-off at St Austell on Sunday.
Lead off man for Falmouth was last year's captain, Henry Churcher. His was a very close contest and after losing the 16th and halving the 17th, Henry was dormie one down on the 18th tee, but he managed to win the last hole, with a shot and secured half a point for the visitors team.
Second out was rising star Marek Churcher, who went into an early lead and was three up by the eighth hole. He maintained his form and secured his point 4 & 3.
Falmouth's middle man was Glenn Fortune, who battled hard, but went three down after 13.
But he won the next four four holes in a row to go one up after 17 and then coolly secured a half on the 18th to win his point one up.
The final two members of the team, Duncan Ayres and Colin Ross lost close matches, to give a final score of 2½ to 2 ½.
This resulted in a sudden death playoff and Falmouth selected the ever reliable Colin Ross for the job.
He ended up playing the opponent he had just lost to over 18 holes, but it was a fresh start on the first hole.
After both drives and good approach shots, Colin had to putt first. He calmly rolled in his birdie and the St Austell player missed his under the pressure to give Falmouth a hard earned victory on the first extra hole.
TREWIN BACK TO BEST:
Weather conditions were good, and the wind was nonexistent for the first time this year, which made for good scoring at Falmouth Golf Club on Saturday.
It was the January Monthly Stableford and early scoring suggested that the result would be a close run thing. In fifth place, was Dan Briers, who was one of no fewer than six competitors who scored 41pts.
Fourth place went to Dennis Pickard, also with 41 and in third, with the best of the 41s, was Bob Aggus.
Second place on the day, went to Shaun Ramsey. Shaun had back to back birdies on 12 and 13 and despite a wobble on the 14th, returned a great score of 42pts. But out in front and back to his best was Mark Trewin, who also had 42pts. he calmly constructed a level par back nine, which gave him 24 points, beating Shaun by four on the back nine.
Results: 1 Mark Trewin 42pts, 2 Shaun Ramsey 42pts, 3 Bob Aggus 41pts, 4 Dennis Pickard 41pts, 5 Dan Briers 41pts.
Boxing
PAIR STAR IN DORSET:
Two boxers from the Falmouth/Penryn Boxing Club travelled to Poole in Dorset to box on Friday at the Hamworthy Recreation Centre.
Dave Pruen, aged 16 boxed J. Rouse from Wessex ABC. This was Dave's second bout.
The bout started with both boxers very cautious with only a few shots thrown.
It seemed that Dave Pruen was just ahead in the second round.
The third round was very close but Dave was unlucky to be given a public warning from a very strict referee which cost him the fight on a split decision.
The most exciting bout of the evening brought the crowd to their feet.
Jake Jensen showed all the skill and determination to beat a very capable and more experienced R Mason from Poole.
Mason had 27 bouts against Jake's six.
At the start of the first round Mason showed his experience by making Jensen miss.
In the second half of the first round Jensen started catching his man with some great shots and then rocked him with a good left hook to the chin followed by a right hook which had his man all at sea.
His opponent showed guts and determination and came back with some of his own shots but Jensen won the first round.
In the second round Mason started strong but was caught again with a ferocious left hook and after a couple more shots were dropped with another left hook and took a count of eight.
The third round was similar with Jensen decisively winning on a unanimous points decision.

Falmouth pulled one back with a well taken strike from Clare Hudson to give a half-time score of 2-1 to the visitors.

PENRYN VICTORIOUS:
St Agnes 4, Penryn U7s 12
Penryn made the trip to the north coast club of St Agnes and were welcomed by a large squad of eager youngsters, which was a credit to the home club.
The opening score was by Billy to give the visitors an early lead but this was soon cancelled out by St Agnes. Billy completed a hat-trick with two more unanswered scores to give Penryn an early lead. It was a lead that was to be reinforced as Luke ran half the length of the field to score.
The next score was to once again go the way of Penryn, and was a try for Sullivan who crossed for his first try for the team.
George got the next for the Borough to make it 6-1 before St Agnes scored again. George and Ben both scored at the end of the first half only for St Agnes to have the final say to make it 8-2.
Kian, Owen and Joe all ran well with the ball with Kian and Owen both having scores disallowed.
The second half was a little closer and St Agnes got over the line first. This was soon cancelled out by George getting a third.
Ben got his second of the day, a good achievement considering his first ever came only in the last game played, allied with his defensive work he was awarded best all round performance.
George finished the game off with two more to send Penryn home victorious once again.
Penryn: William, Toby, Daniel, Kian, Owen, Billy, Joe, Ben, Luke, Harry, George, Sullivan. Scorers: George (5), Billy (3), Ben (2), Sullivan, Luke.
Penryn Under 8s 6 St Agnes U8s 12
St Agnes opened the scoring only to see it immediately cancelled out by some slick passing amongst the Penryn players that saw James Robertson go over for a well worked try.
St Agnes then ran in two unanswered tries after a period of sustained attacking from the Penryn youngsters.
Solomon Littlejohn then brought the scores level with two tries, only to see St Agnes score shortly before the end of the first session.
Penryn then brought on a complete set of new players, but with St Agnes keeping the same players on the field for the second session, it was their continuity from the first half that saw then open up a four-try advantage.
Penryn were not totally outplayed in the session, in which Matt Badger and Thomas Freeman both scored.
In the final session St Agnes scored a further three tries which somewhat distorted the score line, before Thomas Freeman rounded off matters for Penryn.
Penryn Squad and (try scorers): Ben Thorpe, James Robertson (1), Solomon Littlejohn (2), Thomas Freeman (2), Toby Browning , Matt Badger (1), Mackenzie Munns, Jack Martin, Jori Bennet, Joseph Hockley, Ethan Weaver, Oscar Griffiths, Jago Hughes, Piran Glasby.
Camborne U10s v Falmouth U10
After some good phased play it was livewire scrum half Will Daniell who got the scoreboard ticking over for Falmouth.
Quick to build on that momentum, Falmouth's strong mauling game turned the ball over and allowed Sam Ahearne, with Louis Markou in close support, to plough through the home defence and score the first of his three tries.
Camborne exploited some poor Falmouth tackling to score what was to be their only try of the day.
Falmouth gained great field position and from the resulting maul tenacious Alex Wilson wrestled the ball out of the maul and touched down for his first try of the day.
Following some good second and third phase play both Alex and Sam were able to capitalise on the team effort and score their second tries and pull away from the home side. After Macsen's earlier run he was not to be denied a second time, and after some robust tackling from the home side, he also managed to get his name on the scoresheet taking a couple of the Camborne team over the try line with him.
The home team were penalised for some loose tackling and from the resultant penalty, five metres from the try line, Dylan Caban received the ball and burst through the home defence for a deserved try.
By this stage of the game the home team were really running on empty and from a lineout close to their own try line Sam Ahearne, who showed tremendous resolve through the entire game, pounced on the loose ball for a final opportunist try.
Falmouth have no time to rest on their laurels, and will have to raise their game, as they entertain Penzance next week in a return encounter of their first game of the season that saw an under strength Falmouth team suffer a heavy defeat at the hands of the Pirates.
The coaches have never mulled over the honours more than after this fantastic team performance, however the man of the match went to Sam Ahearne following a fine all-round display and a hat-trick of tries. The 'Crunchie' awards went to Louis and Dylan Caban, the latter while he was playing mostly for Camborne! However, all of the team should be proud of themselves after this performance.
Falmouth: Louis Markou, Jasper Roebuck, Macsen Osmond, Will Daniell, Otis Chetwyn-Wood, Ollie Banner, Max Van-Dinther, Alex Wilson, Louis Caban, Dylan Caban, Harvey Martin, Isaac Wagland, Sam Ahearne, Liberty Hartley and Owen Barret-Granger.
