The campaign for a new skatepark in Falmouth has stepped up a notch. The Falmouth Skatepark Committee has re-ignited its quest to transform the park and is tonight (24 January) holding a fundraising and awareness film night at Rebel Brewery in Penryn. The evening will feature some of the latest US film releases that are not yet available in the UK, as well as music, food and a bar.

The campaign was started a number of years ago by Micky Cartlidge who was 15. A meeting was held with the council to get the ball rolling and since then the skatepark committee have been trying to raise £250,000 needed to build a new state of the art concrete skatepark for the existing site at Dracena.

Committee chairperson, Alex Brinnen, said: "The council have been excellent and are strongly supporting the project and allowing us to expand the existing site to make it bigger and better than ever!

We've been beavering away at this for a while now and the main sticking point was renewing the land lease with the new Cornwall Council. This is now all sorted and we are full steam ahead with the project as well as trying to unite all the local skaters and student skaters together to work towards a common shared goal."

Alex added: "We really feel that this project is as much about uniting all the skaters in the area together as well as building a new park. This is very much a community and team building exercise as much as getting a new skatepark designed and built!"

The project has caught the eye of some of the largest skatepark manufacturers including tony hawks own park building company/charity!

At tonight's event, the Committee will also be launching their new promotional t-shirt at which has been sponsored by Faltown Skateboards, Sessions Surf Shop and Thrashion Recycled Skateboard Jewellery with funding also provided by Falmouth Town Council.

The doors will open at 7pm, and tickets will be £5 on the door. This will be an over 18's event.
