Proposals to enable equal civil marriage are to be discussed at a public meeting hosted by the Falmouth and Exeter (Cornwall Campus) University Debating Union. It's being held on Friday 1st March in the Lecture Theatre at Woodlane Campus from 5pm.

A panel of students from Falmouth and Exeter (Cornwall Campus) Universities will be joined by Truro and Falmouth MP Sarah Newton to debate the equal civil marriage proposals. The discussion will then be opened to the audience, with local residents having the opportunity to express their views.

The meeting will be chaired by the Bishop of Truro the Rt. Rev. Tim Thornton and Debating Union Chairman Tom Pike.

Mrs Newton has pledged to vote according to the majority view of her constituents at the third reading of the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill in the House of Commons, and has asked constituents to pass on their thoughts on the proposals to her by email, phone or letter.

Commenting on the meeting Mrs Newton said:

"I am delighted to participate in the University Debating Union's discussion on equal marriage. This public meeting, following on from meetings the Bishop and I held in January, will enable people to learn more about what is actually being proposed.

''I look forward to listening closely to the views of local people at the meeting on the 1st March, and am grateful to the Falmouth and Exeter Universities, and Bishop Tim, for enabling this event to go ahead.''

Local residents wishing to participate in the meetings are asked to register their attendance through calling Mrs Newton's office on 01872 274 760.
