PEOPLE are being invited to have their say at a public meeting on a controversial scheme to build a 74-bedroom hotel in the heart of Falmouth.

New Cornwall Developments is seeking permission to build a Premier Inn Hotel and restaurant to be owned by Whitbread on a car park site at Campbeltown Way, Port Pendennis.

The hotel would stand near Events Square, Killigrew monument and Arwenack House.

So far more than 250 people have objected to the proposed scheme, saying it would threaten local independent hoteliers, lead to the loss of much-needed parking while increasing traffic and be an overdevelopment of the area.

Cornwall Council is holding a public meeting on Monday, 6pm, at Falmouth School, Trescobeas Road.

Members of the council's strategic planning committee want to hear peoples' views on the scheme so that councillors understand all sides of the debate.

No decision will be taken on the day but would be made by the committee at a meeting (which will be webcast live on the Cornwall Council website) at County Hall in Truro on a date yet to be agreed.

In a letter to Campbeltown Way resident Bob Sturland, Whitbread said the Falmouth hotel would be one of its smaller businesses within its 630-hotel national chain.

It said following discussions with nearby residents New Cornwall Developments has changed the design saying it is now several metres further away from adjacent buildings and its height has reduced.

Contrary to objectors' concerns it stated the hotel would support the economy by providing jobs and encouraging tourism.

Rosemary Ridette-Gregory from the Falmouth and District Hoteliers' Association, which is fighting the plan, has appealed to local people to make their views known.

She previously told the West Briton: "It has been designed with one motivation – to fit in as many bedrooms as possible in minimal space.

"We expect the council to honour our opinions.

"This town is unique, diverse, different from other places. We want to make sure it stays that way."

What is there to discuss? This a chain so if it is built it will take away custom from existing hotels and B & Bs and the profits will leave Cornwall. It is quite simply against local economic interests and further detracts from the area around Arwenack.
