A Falmouth street party celebrating the Royal wedding last Friday ended with a local man being tasered and a policeman being injured.

The street party on Marlborough Road had been advertised through fliers and social networking sites and over 300 people partied throughout the day.

The event took a darker turn as night drew on and local police struggled to keep the the noise down. Officers tried to clear the street, which didn’t have Council approval to be be closed, at around 7pm.

Police then shot a 19-year-old with a taser who was later cautioned for being drunk and disorderly. The man has been described as ‘local’ and not part of the student population.

Marlborough Road is renowned for being the home of many of Falmouth’s student population. Some local residents were unhappy about the party saying: "That was not a street party. It was a student binge. It was chaos."

One resident told FalmouthPeople that the day was “OK for her family but a little rowdy.”

Falmouth Mayor Geoffrey Evans descried how he say party goers attack a squad car carrying a police dog.

Students vs. Locals

MP for Falmouth and Truro Sarah Newton will be meeting with authorities to discuss the incident, but has sparked controversy by saying that Marlborough Road “used to be lived in by ‘normal’ people.”

Students have hit back saying: “If they will expand the Uni at a phenomenal pace in a small town and not supply enough student housing, honestly!

“What do they expect? Students are ‘normal people’ too and they need to live somewhere!”

University College Falmouth has said that it’s launching an investigation into alleged student involvement.

Yet again, a perfect example of misconstrued news articles, where will it stop?! It astounds me that this even even made the 'Falmouth Packet', let alone the BBC Spotlight News! How anybody could describe this one off street party event (with people in fancy dress eating cake and appreciating the once-in-a-blue-moon national liberty to consume alcohol in the street) as 'chaos' and 'rowdy' is beyond belief. Among the other media and council fabrications where that the road had been 'closed'; utter codswallop, the quiet road was at no stage closed, and the handful of cars and two practically empty buses were able to pass through, undisturbed as the crowd peacefully parted. Another crucial piece of information that was not mentioned by the council is that they had previously given full permission for the road to be closed during the event. The organisers had obtained permission from every resident on the road; and said permission was then retracted the day before the wedding when the council realised Marlborough Road was part of a busy bus route (2 buses passed through all day, with 1 collective passenger).

Sarah Newton MP said "It is vital that lessons can be learned from this event to ensure that students and residents in Falmouth can respect one another and live peacefully alongside each other," In response, when you consider that the reported 'chaos' and general implied dissidence amounted to a few crushed cans at the side of the road and the vast majority of residents, young or old, having a jolly good time; one could hardly say that student and non student residents were not living peacefully alongside each other. I would argue the complete opposite, and that this event showed how well students and residents can get along with each other on a day that was purely the celebration of a fantastic royal wedding.

I'm sure news reporters could have even turned the wedding in London into a 'abominate revelers paradise', as 'millions of people descended upon the streets, making noise and leaving rubbish, where several people had to be arrested'. Of course they wouldn't, as there were far to many people there to be able to pull off a lie like that, yet on a smaller scale, they seem to have managed it here in Falmouth.

With the exception of one mans actions, the only law breaking was committed by the police themselves, who ordered the party music to cease. After one (non student) attendee asked the police what laws were being broken, and where all the supposed 'rowdy participants' were, the police agreed that no laws were being broken and that the party could continue as before, and would only have to stop at 7pm (which it did). Funny they forgot to mention that in the report!

In conclusion, the demonisation of peaceful Falmouth students, at what would be described by any rational person as a spectacular event, showing the potential for students and residents to make merry with minimal impact on their surroundings, during a one-off occasion is utterly outrageous. Times have changed, as they have throughout history, the human race evolves, as do its fashions and creeds. We apparently live in a free country, free of oppression, where people can express themselves in any way they do so wish, providing it is within the law. Given the number of people present at the event, it seems peculiar they only found one person who was averse to the proceedings, yet his opinions were the only ones taken into account. Why? because there wouldn't have been a news story otherwise.

It does seem like and odd choice of words she used. You'd of thought she would know better.

Sarah Newton has really nailed her colours to the mast with her use of deeply offensive and politically inept language aimed the very constituents she was (narrowly) elected to represent. The clash between students and ‘normal’ Falmouth folk will most likely dissolve in the near future anyway, a result of her ideologically driven right wing party pricing the vast majority of working class folk out of the higher education system by increasing tuition fees to 9K a year at UCF.
