'Super Summer Time' could boost local economy

The clocks may not go back in October if the government take on plans put forward by a campaign group. The Lighter Later Campaign says that a permanent British Summer Time would save energy and 450,000 tonnes of Carbon a year.

In Cornwall, this could mean a boost to the tourism industry and experts believe it could bring an extra £100 million a year to the region.

The plans, that are being coordinated by the 10:10 group, would see us maintain a “Summer time”, but would be 2 hours ahead of GMT.

Dr Elizabeth Garnsey lead the research at Cambridge University. She thinks the change would help the UK meet its carbon emissions reduction targets: "The carbon savings associated with this clock change are significant, equivalent to the carbon footprint of the production of 1,800 plastic bags for every home in Britain every year, or taking around 200,000 cars off the road."

Franny Armstrong, from the 10:10 campaign thinks the argument for change is a strong: "Hands up who doesn't want our country to be safer, lighter, more prosperous and with less pollution? And who doesn't want to save money on their electricity bills without lifting a finger?"

What do you think? Should we leave GMT and be on the same time as Europe? Do we even need a summer time? Will it boost tourism in Falmouth? Let us know you views in the comments.

For the past couple of years I started work at 6am so always had to drive there in the dark. Admittedly for the couple of weeks a year that it was light on my way in it made me feel so much more awake but saying that I don't think I'd mind the change. I eventually came round after a good cup of coffee or three!

Some of us will remember going to work or school in the dark the last time this was tried. It was very unpopular then. I don't see why it would be accepted now.
