Devon and Cornwall Police are urging people to drink sensibly during the World Cup. The force is stepping up their efforts during the tournament and and advising pubs and clubs on responsible drinking.
Chief Inspector Peter Coppin-Harris said: "Our policing priority is to make sure that this is an enjoyable tournament for everyone, wherever they watch it, and that those causing drink-related trouble are dealt with robustly.
"Anyone caught causing trouble or disorder during the World Cup risks getting locked up and may be issued with a Football Banning Order which could see them banned from every football ground in England and Wales.”
According to the Police, the last World Cup saw a 76% increase in violent incidents during match days.
They will also be tackling domestic violence. Research has shown that a sharp rise in domestic violence and domestic abuse incidents during the World Cup is likely to happen – particularly following England games.
During the last World Cup in 2006, Devon and Cornwall Police saw a 73% increase in reports of domestic violence crimes during England match days.
Detective Superintendent Clements said: “There is no excuse for domestic violence and perpetrators must be clear that the World Cup does not give them any justification for abusive behaviour directed at family members.
“We want everyone to enjoy the World Cup tournament and that includes ensuring that people are free of the fear of violence. Domestic abuse is an enormous issue as one in five of all violent crimes reported are related to domestic abuse.”
Comments
Its such a pity that the tiny minority give football fans a bad name. 99% of people want to have a drink, enjoy the game and just share the experience with others. I hope the police are steadfast in their dealing with the other 1%
