This year’s Sea Shanty Festival in Falmouth will be smaller than planned as the organisers haven’t been granted a license. Cornwall Council says the application was declined because it was submitted too late.

John Warren, one of the festival organisers told the BBC: "For some reason we think there might have been insufficient stampage on the envelope, but there is no point in recriminations.

"What we're asking is if there any possibility that the council, with a week to go, might reconsider."

Cornwall Council require applications to be submitted 10 days before the event.

Some parts of the festival will still be going ahead. Events on Discovery Quay are still happening as the area is licensed for the Falmouth Boat Show. Smaller events will also be happening in pubs that are licensed.

The festival raises money for the RNLI and last year managed to raise over £30,000. This years festival will run from the 18th to the 20th of June.

Nice to know that the Council are doing everything in their power to support and encourage tourism, business and charity work in Falmouth by making sure that the rules are followed to the letter. I wonder how many days the application would have sat unactioned on a desk at County Hall had it been there four days earlier, or maybe it was and they just lost it.

oh what a shame, unfortunate that the application was late but seeing as it raises so much money for the RNLI it would be great if the council could bend the rules a bit.

Always disappointing to see the 'rule book' winning over fun and joy at local events in Cornwall however with the boxes ticked Cornwall council can look forward to an excellent end of year report with a great bonus as well!
