Marine Engineering students at Falmouth Marine School visited the Merchant Navy Open Day at Warsash Maritime Academy last week for careers advice.

Along with tutors Martin Peart and Dave Spencer, nine marine engineering students and one boatbuilding student left College on Thursday, spending the night in Southampton, to attend the event on Friday 22nd January.

Warsash Maritime Academy delivers training for the Merchant Navy and their annual Open Day allows prospective students to view the training facilities and on-site accommodation available. The Academy is a faculty of Southampton Solent University.

Also present at the Open Day were 16 Shipping Companies as well as recruitment agencies. Students had the opportunity to visit all the stands during the day as well discuss opportunities available for sponsored cadetship entry to the Merchant Navy.

Dave and Martin organised the trip, to ensure that they are able to advise their current students and also prospective new students, of the entry qualifications required as well as the opportunities available to commence a career with the Merchant Navy.

Martin Peart, tutor on Light Marine Engineering Level 3 said: “In many cases students will have left school without the required GCSE’s for entry as either a Deck or Engineering Officer Cadet. This visit will allow us at Falmouth Marine School to liaise with the Academy staff in developing a marine related academic programme of study to meet the entry requirements.”

Merchant Navy Officer Cadets are usually sponsored through their programme of learning by one of the shipping companies and have the opportunity to achieve either a Higher National Diploma or a Foundation Degree in the relevant subject area.

Dave Linnell OBE, Principal of Cornwall College commented: “These additional activities greatly add to the student experience. It’s important for students to see what careers are available to them as well the attributes employers are looking for.”
