Falmouth's dirty streets...

Now I'm not talking about the main streets, the Town Council does a very good job of keeping them clean. I'm talking about the side streets. If you head out of the main shopping area and into the residential areas you'll see a very different picture.

Rubbish!!!
The problem seems to be seagulls. People put their rubbish out in black bags and these very quickly get pecked through. Nobody seems to take responsibly for cleaning it up.
One local resident told me: "Much of the rubbish comes from bin bags which are left on the pavement overnight and are immediately attacked by seagulls who throw the contents everywhere. I saw the lack of cleaning illustrated a while back by a dead rat lying in the gutter of a road I use quite frequently. I saw it slowly decompose until it was eventually washed away by heavy rainfall."
So what's the answer? The obvious solution would be putting bin bags in bins that are seagull proof. The problem here is who is going to pay for the bins? Should the Council stump up the cash or should the residents?
What do you think? Does Falmouth have a rubbish problem and whose responsibly is it to sort it out? Let us know in the comments.

Let's face it the council are not going to have any spare money to put to this problem in the next few years. People living in a street need to take responsibility and make sure the rubbish they put out is safe against bird attack and if it is attacked clear up the mess. We all need to take a bit more civic responsibility and pride in our town.

ReportWhen you walk down Killigrew Street every morning, as I do, you willl see so much more rubbish now that recycling has to be put out the front of the properties. The service lanes at the rear are large enough for the recycling vans to use so it seems crazy to have to put out all this rubbish in front of properties on one of the the main roads coming into Falmouth. Some properties now leave their recycling containers out the front all the time and it just makes the road look really scruffy and unkempt. There is rubbish left around the trees lining street where boxes have been left and I am sure that this is one way in which things could be improved at no extra cost. Most properties were provided with a black bin and a lid by the council so there should be no excuse for placing out black bin bags with no protection. If you require more than one bin then it should be down to the householders to purchase.

Reportwe have this problem, we have to put the rubbish out the night before as the bin men come so early. But often we find the bins in our road are attacked by seagulls. We clear any rubbish away from the front of our house but it's not ideal. We can't really use a bin either as the front door is right on the pavement and we'd have to drag it right through the house to take it outside. Blankets on top of the bags seem to fox them for a bit.
