The Top Ten Of Falmouth!

Ok, so it's getting to that time of year when we all start venturing out a little bit more, hopefully the finances have recovered from christmas and the weather is on the up (ahem). So, what should we do?

To help everyone out, Falmouth People has compiled a 'Top Ten' of things to do/see/eat/drink in the area. It's completely subjective so please do let us know what you think - even add your own ten below and perhaps we can come up with a definitive list - hurrah!

10. Gurkha - Nepalese Restaurant/Takeaway - The Moor - Not the cheapest Indian (well, not strictly Indian, but you know what I mean) food in town, but I would put money on it being the best. Everything I have ever tried from here has been amazing and I treat myself whenever I can find an excuse! Plus there's a 15% discount on takeaways so it ain't so bad. I highly recommend the chicken pakora starter and the lush butter chicken main - best butter chicken I have ever tasted (and I've done Manchester's curry mile). Go for the eat-all-you-want buffet on Sundays for a cheap and bountiful tasting session.

9. Shades - Nightclub - Quay Hill - Ok, I know, it hasn't changed for 30 years, you stick to the floors, blah blah blah. Whatever. A wicked little place with a great atmosphere, and only a few quid to get in. The drinks are reasonable, the music is nice and varied, the punters are cheerful and the toilets aren't a health hazard. Plus it's right by Chainlocker - everyone's a winner. Certainly tops my list of Falmouth nightlife.

8. Falmouth Vintage Flea Market - A recent addition to Falmouth's shopping experience, set up by the magnificent Kitty Gubbins. The market runs once a month and boasts some truly luscious items that you won't find anywhere else in town. If you haven't been, go. And buy me something pretty while you're at it.

7. Xen 2 - Noodle Bar - The Moor, Falmouth 01326 218 346 - Now I know there's been one in Truro for ages, but it's still amazing to have one in Falmouth! I absolutely adore Xen, it somehow allows you to have a big slap up meal without feeling like you're doing anything wrong. Which of course you aren't, because it is far healthier than your average Chinese takeaway fare. If you really want a treat, try the mongolian lamb starter, it is to die for. I go weak at the knees at the mere thought.

6. Lolo - Kids Clothing - 31 High Street - Now I don't have kids, but I do like shopping. And I have plenty of friends who are currently having babies and whose kids need presents... when you know virtually nothing about toddlers, it is SO difficult to buy for them! However if you wander into Lolo then you may well find yourself buying half the racks and lamenting that such a place didn't exist when you were a child.

5. Rowes - Pasties etc. - In my humble opinion, the best pasties in Falmouth (therefore Cornwall)! Buy a proper big 'un and sit on Custom House Quay  to eat it and watch the tourists getting bothered by seagulls and the boats coming and going. Yum.

4. National Maritime Museum Cornwall - Discovery Quay - Ok, not a hidden gem exactly, but still a great place to spend a day, with or without the kids. Loads of surprisingly fascinating stuff, hands-on activities, plus changing exhibitions with the focus on Cornish history and culture. Ever wondered why the Packet is called that? Neither had I, but still thoroughly enjoyed finding out. If you have never been then you definitely should. And if you have, go again.

3. Chainlocker - Pub - Quay Hill - Ok so it gets stupidly crowded, but there's good reason for it! Surely the best pub in town? A place where you can chill out with a pint outside over-looking the Fal and nobody minds if you decide to sing some Cornish sea shanties around the table. Plus, it's only a quick stumble up the hill (if you manage not to roll right back down) to Shades!

2. All About Olives  - Deli - Arwenack Street - I only discovered this place last summer, but it completely blew me away! As delis go it's very reasonably priced and has a fab 'try before you buy' policy, always a bonus!

1. Great Shakes - Milkshake Bar - Berkeley Court 07814 433 671‎(no website) I absolutely LOVE this place and am completely incapable of walking past without stopping for an enormous yummy milkshake. So much better than the other chain stores that have sprung up lately (including one in Falmouth) plus they do a loyalty card scheme - nothing bad to say at all. Go there, drink shakes (particularly the fudge one), be happy.

So what do you think? I know at least half of you will disagree about everything, and even more of you about the best pasty shop in town (it's a debate that will never be sated) so let us know! Add your comments, what you agree or disagree with, or even your own top ten below - we want to know!

Trebilcock - I was talking about the inside of the pub, where you can sit around and have a sing-song, not outside, which would be pretty inconsiderate to the locals - of which I take it you are one? When I've seen it happen it was indoors, and was greeted by applause and general cheeriness - which is obviously a good thing, who wants to sit in a pub filled only with the sound of morose silence eh?

"nobody minds if you decide to sing some Cornish sea shanties around the table."  How do you know?   Some of us who live in the vicinity have to listen to sea shanties, vomiting and 'here trevor you comin to Shades or not?'     Yea some of us mind.

Hey Shakeshop - sorry about that, I had it on what I thought was good authority that you were part of a larger chain, and it seemed believable as your shop reminds me so much of one I've been to in Chester a few years back. I do remain loyal to Great Shakes, although when I came into your shop I was impressed with your range of American candy!

    Hey there
Just a note to say that The Shake Shop (the other milkshake shop in Falmouth) is a small family ran business and not part of a chain.
Didn't want anyone thinking it was part of a franchise.
    Thanks
    Phil
