PUPILS from Penzance have helped a Falmouth degree student with his end-of-year project.
Tim Elks, who is studying for a foundation degree in marine sports science at Falmouth Marine School, chose “go green for the surf”, focusing on the importance of protecting the environment for ethical and enjoyment purposes.
Tim organised a day of activities with an environmental focus and invited year 10 students from Mount’s Bay School to join in.
The day began with a presentation by fellow student Hayley Why on the effects rubbish has on oceans and the importance of looking after coastal environments.
This was followed by a beach clean at Gwithian for which the Surfers Against Sewage campaign group donated equipment and provided information packs for the students. The group collected 17 bags of rubbish. Once the beach was clean, the pupils were treated to a surf lesson by instructors and qualified students from the marine school. Tim, 28, said at the end of the day: “I believe that engaging young people in cleaning up a problem, coupled with a positive experience in the water, will help to reduce these issues.” Dave Linnell, principal of Cornwall College, of which Falmouth Marine School is part, said: “It’s a great opportunity for students to learn about marine issues, as well as finding out about the subjects on offer.”
