With the fireworks and bonfire season upon us Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service is urging people to stay safe this evening.
Here's a guide to keeping out of danger on bonfire night.
- Plan your firework display in advance to make it both safe and enjoyable
- Make sure fireworks are stored in a closed box and use them one at a time
- Always read the instructions on each firework carefully
- Be sure to keep flames (including cigarettes) away from fireworks until you're ready to set them off
- Light the firework at arm's length and stand well back
- Never return to a firework once it has been lit, even if it hasn't gone off
- Never put fireworks in your pocket or throw them
- Point rocket fireworks away from spectators
- Wear eye protection and gloves when lighting fireworks
- Remember to keep a torch and a bucket of water close to hand
- Do not use petrol or paraffin on a bonfire
- Always supervise children around fireworks and don't give sparklers to children under five
- Keep pets safe indoors
- Be sure to check the bonfire is out and surroundings are safe before leaving
And remember to have fun!
