Volunteer drivers are urgently needed in the Falmouth and Penryn area to help people with essential journeys that aren't covered by any existing local transport services. An appeal has gone out from Volunteer Cornwall who are looking to hear from anyone with their own car, some free time and a willingness to help others.

Transport Contracts Manager for Volunteer Cornwall, Brian Smith, explains: "We help transport people for a wide range of journeys, including health appointments, education, leisure, hospital visiting and shopping. We help many thousands of people, operating millions of miles across Cornwall."

He adds: "As people now have to contribute to towards the costs of their journey, we want to try and reduce the amount they have to pay by providing drivers who live close by."

People who have already become volunteer drivers in Cornwall have signed up for a number of reasons. One said: "I used to suffer with depression and getting out and meeting people is a therapy, and the expenses are a big help towards running the car."

Another added "I am too young to retire and it is my way of putting something back into the community and justifies me keeping my car and a way of meeting people."
